Write results from the @agentmemory/mcp local fallback now say they are local. memory_save and memory_governance_delete add storage: "local" and a warning: the server did not confirm the call, and the change went to the fallback file the server never reads, or to memory that is lost on exit.

When livez or a proxied call fails, the shim writes to ~/.agentmemory/standalone.json and replied {"saved": id}, which reads as a successful save. The fallback was announced only on stderr, and nothing copies that file to the server. In #1552 the engine hung for six days while the agent kept confirming memories later sessions could not find.

Fallback reads stay unmarked: local memory_sessions must match the REST response exactly.

Fixes #1552

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Local fallback responses for saving or deleting memories now identify the result as local and include a warning that the server did not confirm the request.
    • Warnings distinguish between changes saved to a local file—which the server does not read—and in-memory changes that are lost when the process exits.
    • Save responses continue to include the saved ID, and delete responses include deletion details.

When the server does not confirm a call, the stdio shim applies
memory_save and memory_governance_delete to its local fallback store and
replied {"saved": id}, which reads as a successful save. The fallback was
announced only on stderr, which the model never sees, so an agent kept
confirming memories that the server never received while its engine was
hung.

Local write results now carry storage: "local" and a warning that the
server at the configured URL did not confirm the call and that it ran
against the local fallback file, which the server does not read, or
against an in-memory store that is lost on exit when no file was written.

📝 Walkthrough

persist() now reports whether a local file write succeeded. Local fallback responses for memory saves and governance deletes include storage details and warn that the server did not confirm the call.

Changes: Local fallback reporting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Report local persistence outcome
src/mcp/in-memory-kv.ts
persist() returns false when no persistence path exists or writing fails, and true after a successful write.
Add storage details to fallback responses
src/mcp/standalone.ts, test/mcp-standalone.test.ts, test/mcp-standalone-proxy.test.ts
Save and governance-delete fallback responses report whether data was written to a local file or remains in memory. Tests cover these responses and verify the proxied save result.
