🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy liftPersist completion after deleting the backfill marker.
When an incremental backfill completes,
completeBackfill()savesbackfillSince: null, deletes the marker, and then clearsbackfillSinceonly in memory. If no later vector save occurs,load()returns the persistednull.prepareBackfill()then recreates a full-backfill marker. On the next startup, older missing vectors can become
fullBackfillPending. With full recovery opt-in disabled, startup reports the backlog and leaves recovery inwaiting-for-opt-in. Persist the cleared cutoff after deleting the marker. Keep the persistednullfallback if that save fails.Suggested fix

Historical semantic-search coverage can disappear after a dimension reset or a capped rebuild: the next checkpoint advances the timestamp cutoff, leaving older missing records unqueued and reporting no backlog. Recovery now retains durable intent until coverage is complete and the vector checkpoint succeeds.
Full recovery keeps the existing explicit opt-in and per-start cap, counts deferred records, and reuses successful vectors on restart. Incremental work saves conservative full restart intent before its first embedding call while keeping the current run's original eligibility. That prevents an in-flight record restored with an older timestamp from falling behind the cutoff. Interrupted incremental recovery therefore requires full-recovery opt-in on the next start.
Marker failures pause vector persistence and recovery while keyword search and source capture remain available. Completion checks current source coverage, persists a checkpoint fallback before deleting the marker, and does not advance the cutoff on a no-op checkpoint save. Metadata-only recovery checkpoints preserve the fast first-vector save path, including after restart from an empty checkpoint; real failed writes retain normal retry throttling. Provider replacement, partial failures, wrong dimensions, missing markers, stale jobs, concurrent writes and snapshot replacements retain pending work.
Validation:
test:vector-recovery:packagedgate passed all 15 recorded phases against the actual archive, pinned native iii 0.22.1 and a deterministic local embedding endpoint. It exercises restart, cap, opt-in withdrawal, outage, dimension reset/refusal, quarantine, concurrent writes and actual snapshot restore to an older timestamp. Restored content was recalled correctly, installed artifacts stayed unchanged and all service ports closed. Archive SHA-256:a73bb08b4c7882df6ac66483ba95ad7ca309e58e3ff3452ec130600db9481b5f.This change covers startup vector recovery. It does not implement bounded cold graph reads, change the iii dependency family, or introduce a general durable embedding outbox for every live write.
