Large graph searches currently enumerate complete node and edge scopes before traversal limits apply. This change replaces those request-time scans with generation-scoped retrieval indexes maintained alongside canonical writes. Keyword and vector results keep the optional 500 ms graph budget.

Name, character, provenance, adjacency, exact relationship and inventory postings use bounded records and point reads. Search, graph views, graph-node detail, temporal queries, optional reflection graph context, viewer counts and server graph statistics use the indexes. Readers verify generation and revision before returning evidence; import, mesh, snapshot restore, deletion and reset cannot publish a mixed or stale view. Oversized projections retain canonical data and report partial coverage.

Temporal reconciliation selects the highest-version current predecessor using an exact source/target/type posting, with deterministic ID tie-breaking and canonical validation inside the existing 512-read budget. Unrelated or historical edges cannot consume that lookup budget. Older index controls fail closed and require an explicit rebuild instead of silently losing predecessor tracking.

Uninitialized stores, including fresh installations, require explicit initialization:

agentmemory graph-index status --json
agentmemory graph-index migrate --allow-legacy-scan --json

Initial discovery still reads complete scopes because the pinned engine cannot paginate them. It requires a maintenance window. A durable, bounded ID manifest then supports idempotent replay, saved progress and restart recovery. Startup resumes sealed work without another legacy scan; interrupted discovery requires renewed consent. Missing/corrupt metadata fails closed with an explicit recovery message. Automatic legacy boot compaction is deferred, and unavailable counts appear as unknown.

Validation at 12d34e7:

  • Required build, skill generation/check, documentation synchronization/check and full suite passed: 3,489 tests passed, 4 skipped across 285 passing test files.
  • Actual npm archive with native iii 0.22.1 on macOS arm64/Node 24.19.0: all 18 packaged graph phases passed with 100 nodes, 300 edges and one historical edge, cached dependencies and model calls disabled.
  • Forced termination after manifest sealing and after a durable partial checkpoint recovered all 401 records. Startup, status and ordinary reads performed no canonical graph listings or legacy snapshot reads.
  • Import/mesh rename, stale exclusion, snapshot restore, graph-only memory recall across restart, cursor invalidation, reset, profile isolation and credential rejection passed. Exact relationship postings survived migration, snapshot rekeying and restart.
  • A persisted older index control restarted without implicit scanning, reported the explicit migration action, then rebuilt under a new build ID while preserving memory recall. All service ports closed; archive, installed CLI and worker hashes stayed unchanged.
  • Regression coverage includes direct writes and migrated data, high-degree unrelated/historical edges, duplicate predecessor ordering, delimiter-safe keys, stale/current/delete transitions, concurrent predecessor changes, restart and exhaustion of the unchanged read budget.
  • The REST reference generator now associates methods with their own route registrations; all 141 endpoint paths remain, with migration correctly documented as POST. The packaged graph gate declares its direct ws development dependency.
  • CodeRabbit reviewed all 15 changed files in the review-fix update and raised 0 issues.
  • All eight CI matrix jobs passed on Linux/macOS with Node 20/22/24/26. Both packaged release gate jobs passed, including fresh installation, packaged startup and graph migration/restart checks, on the exact commit above.

The tested archive SHA-256 is 593585e29ce86a8c65feb42558b942b2833b2b8c8a25a0e308ba993119efef73.

Limits and coordination:

  • Indexes add write/storage overhead and old builds are retained. The current 100-node fixture used 1.22 MB of retrieval data, about 16.4x its canonical graph record bytes before control/manifests. The original 140k-node corpus has not completed an indexed migration. Application read budgets do not bound engine storage/memory costs or establish power-loss atomicity.
  • Local packaged evidence uses cached dependencies and synthetic data, without real model conversations. Fresh consumer installation is checked separately by Linux/macOS release CI. Windows and the reporter's actual corpus remain unverified. Same-home named instances share the default credential unless an explicit per-instance secret is configured; separate homes generate separate credentials.
  • fix(graph): keep each observation's best graph score #1560 remains the independent best-path scoring contribution. Prefer it first, then reconcile and retest this owner branch. This change does not replace that contribution.
  • fix(mcp): read graph stats from the snapshot instead of enumerating the graph #1260 remains the narrow MCP graph-stats resource fix. That resource still enumerates graph scopes; this PR does not claim every graph-related operation is bounded. Export, snapshot creation and explicit maintenance remain bulk operations.

Related to #1378. No version bump, PR merge or package/release publication is included.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added graph-index status, migration, and resume commands and API endpoints. Legacy graph migration now requires explicit scan permission.
    • Graph search and retrieval now use bounded, indexed reads, with clearer status for unavailable or partial graph data.
    • Added pagination for graph-node relationships and improved graph context authorization in search.
  • Documentation
    • Updated translated project statistics, including 3,500+ tests and 141 REST endpoints.
    • Added guides to graph-index migration and retrieval limits.

📝 Walkthrough

The PR adds a generation-scoped graph retrieval index and explicit migration workflow. Graph search, temporal queries, reflection, cascade processing, status, and viewer metadata use bounded index reads. New API and CLI commands expose index status, migration, and resume operations.

Thanks for this — request-time enumeration of the complete graph scopes was what made large stores unusable. One data point on the migration path from a large legacy store, since the packaged gate exercises 100 nodes / 300 edges and initial discovery still reads complete scopes.

Read-only measurement, agentmemory 0.9.30, Windows, Node 24.15.0, iii 0.22.1, 2026-10-17:

scope records on disk
mem:graph:nodes 167,103 58.9 MB
mem:graph:edges 404,397 113.2 MB
all six mem:graph:* scopes — 225.7 MB
whole state store 2,087 scope files 2,008 MB

Record counts are from GET /agentmemory/graph/stats; sizes are measured on the scope files. That is roughly 1,670x the node count and 1,350x the edge count of the packaged gate run (100 nodes / 300 edges / 401 records). Both complete scopes have to be read during initial discovery, and mem:graph:edges is a single 113 MB scope file — the monolithic-file shape #1443 describes.

Relevant open reports for a store this size:

What I would want settled before running graph-index migrate --allow-legacy-scan here is whether discovery is expected to survive a single complete-scope read of that size, or whether large legacy graphs need a different seeding path for the manifest. If there is a recommended route for 100K+ node stores, documenting it in graph-index-migration.md would help.

I am willing to run the migration against a copy of this store (~2 GB, outside the primary store) and report wall time, peak memory, and whether the engine heartbeat survives, if that is useful.

Bootstrap question: can graph-index migrate run on a store whose legacy scopes already exceed the inbound frame limit?

Context: a production install on 0.9.30 (Windows) with these state-store sizes:

scope size
mem:graph:edges 134.0 MiB
mem:graph:nodes 69.7 MiB
mem:graph:edge-key 41.2 MiB
mem:graph:name-index 13.2 MiB

The worker's iii WebSocket client uses the ws default maxPayload (100 MiB) and is not configured otherwise, so a single engine response above that is rejected at the frame-parse layer and the connection closes (WS_ERR_UNSUPPORTED_MESSAGE_LENGTH, then close 1006). We hit this today on session-end consolidation, where in 0.9.30 mem::reflect (dist/index.mjs 18519-18525) and mem::cascade-update (18017/18039) still read the complete node and edge scopes - which is exactly what this PR replaces.

The concern is the migration path itself. agentmemory graph-index migrate --allow-legacy-scan posts to the server (body: {allowLegacyScan}), and the CLI's own error text reads:

Initial discovery reads each complete legacy graph scope and can use substantial memory; run it during maintenance.

On a store where mem:graph:edges is already 134 MiB, that discovery read is itself larger than the frame limit, so the migration appears unable to complete on precisely the stores that need it - the indexes cannot be built because building them requires the read they are meant to eliminate.

Questions:

  1. Is there a supported path for stores already above the frame limit - paged or chunked discovery, an offline (CLI-local, no WebSocket) scan, or a documented temporary maxPayload raise for the maintenance window?
  2. Does graph-index resume --allow-legacy-scan help here, or does it re-attempt the same complete-scope read?
  3. Is partial discovery progress durable if the connection drops mid-scan (the migration doc mentions a saved discovering state)?

One migration-design note that may be useful: on 0.9.30 nothing ever deletes entries from mem:graph:name-index, mem:graph:edge-key or mem:graph:node-degree (zero kv.delete call sites targeting those scopes across the dist bundle), and trimScope in graph-compact only trims sourceObservationIds to <= 32 without consulting stale. So the existing side indexes contain entries whose target records are marked stale. Worth deciding explicitly whether a migration should carry those over or drop them, since a rebuild from those indexes would otherwise reintroduce records the canonical readers filter out.
