TML-3686, TML-3689, TML-3690: MongoDB queries take an execution context, as SQL queries do, so only validating entry points accept a contract - #30865
importmongoStatic,{contractFromJson}from'@prisma/orm-mongo/static';importtype{Contract}from'./contract.d';importcontractJsonfrom'./contract.json'with{type: 'json'};// before: mongoQuery trusted whatever it was givenconstq=mongoQuery<Contract>({contract: JSON.parse(text)});// a malformed contract failed later, deep inside a query// after: the contract enters through an entry point that validates it, as it does for SQLconst{ query, raw }=mongoStatic({contract: contractFromJson<Contract>(contractJson)});constusers=query.from('users');// with a client: db.query, db.raw, db.orm
MongoDB's query builder, raw queries and ORM now take an execution context instead of a contract, exactly as their SQL counterparts do. A context can only come from mongoStatic({ contract }) or mongo({ contract }), and both validate the contract once, so an unchecked contract can no longer reach a query.
The decision
The rule SQL already follows
On the SQL side, nothing that builds or runs queries takes a contract. The SQL query builder is called as sql({ context }), and the ORM as orm({ context, runtime }). An execution context is the validated contract together with what queries need from it, such as codecs and the values the database or the client generates. Only two kinds of entry point create one, and both validate the contract once:
the static entry, postgresStatic({ contract }), which builds queries without connecting to a database;
the client, postgres({ contract, … }).
Applications therefore write postgresStatic(…).sql or db.sql, and a contract that fails validation is rejected where it enters, with one error.
MongoDB now follows it
Before this PR, MongoDB's query builder took a contract directly: mongoQuery({ contract }). It trusted whatever it was given, unlike every other entry point that takes a contract. MongoDB now copies the SQL arrangement:
mongoQuery({ context }), mongoRaw({ context }) and mongoOrm({ context, runtime }) take a context, like sql(), SQL's raw queries and orm().
Only mongoStatic({ contract }) and mongo({ contract }) take a contract, and they validate it with the same error.
Applications use mongoStatic(…).query and .raw, or db.query, db.raw and db.orm, as SQL applications use .sql and db.orm.
@prisma/orm-mongo/query-builder republishes the query builder unchanged, as @prisma/orm-postgres/builder does for SQL.
What had to change underneath to copy SQL
The query builder sits in a lower package layer than the MongoDB runtime, and a layer can only import from the layers below it. So the context type had to move down to where the builder can name it, the way SQL keeps its ExecutionContext next to its query builder. Moving it meant making it look like SQL's in every respect:
MongoExecutionContext has no stack. It used to hold the execution stack, the set of pieces a client is built from (target, adapter, extensions), whose types live in a higher layer. SQL's context never held one.
The runtime takes the adapter separately.createMongoRuntime({ context, adapter, driver }) matches the SQL runtime, and mongo() creates the adapter, as the SQL clients do.
MongoExecutionContext has no enums.db.enums is built in the static entry with the framework's buildNamespacedEnums, as Postgres does. The MongoDB ORM checks written enum values, which the SQL ORM does not, so it builds the accessors it needs once per ORM client.
The ORM always has the mutation defaults. Mutation defaults are the values the client generates on create, such as createdAt. Because they now come from the context, the ORM's mutationDefaults option and the ORM.MUTATION_DEFAULTS_MISSING error are gone: an ORM that would skip generated fields can no longer be built. createMongoCollection takes { context, runtime } for the same reason.
MongoExecutionStack has no driver field, since nothing used it.
Two smaller fixes
SqlExecutionStackWithDriver really has a driver (TML-3689). Its driver was optional, and the static entries and toSql used it with no driver, so every client that connects checked for a missing one. The static entries and toSql now use the existing SqlExecutionStack, which has no driver, and SqlExecutionStackWithDriver requires one. createSqlExecutionStack returns the type that matches what it is given, and builds the stack through the framework's createExecutionStack, so the driver gets the target's session settings.
RuntimeMode is declared once (TML-3690). The client option mode ('strict' or 'permissive') was typed in the SQL runtime, so MongoDB and the middleware types wrote the same union out by hand. It now lives in framework-components.
What changes for users
Applications that called mongoQuery, mongoRaw or mongoOrm directly use mongoStatic({ contract }) or the client instead, or pass a context.
Extension authors:createMongoRuntime takes { context, adapter, driver }; mongoOrm takes { context, runtime } (it took executor and enums); createMongoCollection takes { context, runtime }; buildMongoEnums and MongoEnumAccessors are gone, so use db.enums or buildNamespacedEnums; MongoExecutionContext has one type parameter. Code that built a SqlExecutionStackWithDriver with no driver uses SqlExecutionStack.
Upgrade instructions are in upgrade-instructions/pending/mongo-query-takes-context/ and upgrade-instructions/pending/stack-driver-required/.
One difference from SQL remains, outside this PR: MongoDB has no runtime driver descriptor yet, so mongo() creates its driver directly instead of getting it from the stack. That is TML-3763.
How it was checked
Tests:
mongoQuery, mongoRaw and mongoOrm build the same queries from a context as before.
Type tests show none of them accepts { contract }.
mongoStatic and mongo() reject a malformed contract with the same code and message.
A collection created through the public path fills generated fields such as createdAt, and enum checks still reject a value that is not a member.
A type test pins createSqlExecutionStack's two return types, and a Supabase client on a caller's pool keeps its session settings after a role session ends.
Published packages:@prisma/orm-mongo/query-builder and @prisma/orm-family-mongo/query-builder export the same builder, unwrapped.
Review: a full /drive-code-review (system design and code) of the whole branch, then verification rounds. Every acceptance criterion passes.
Repository checks: every CI lint and check step, check:upgrade-coverage --mode pr, coverage in every changed package, the upgrade-instruction tests, the MongoDB integration files, and the retail-store and mongo-demo examples, after merging main.
Alternatives considered
A validating mongoQuery wrapper in the MongoDB package, with the builder renamed and published under an internal/ path. It added an entry point SQL does not have, and duplicated mongoStatic, which already validates and returns the builder.
Keep the stack in MongoExecutionContext and give the runtime a second context type that adds it. SQL's context has no stack, and the SQL runtime receives its adapter separately.
Keep enums on the context, so collections and db.enums share one set of objects. SQL's context has no enums.
Give the stack with a required driver a new name. Once the driver is required, the existing name describes it exactly.
The SQL runtime, the MongoDB runtime, the MongoDB client options and the activity context import it from there. @internal/sql-runtime still exports it, from its exports entry.

SqlExecutionStackWithDriver now requires its driver. createSqlExecutionStack returns it when given a driver, and SqlExecutionStack, which has no driver, when not. toSql and the static entries take SqlExecutionStack. The clients that connect no longer check for a missing driver. The framework ExecutionStack declares its driver optional, so a stack with no driver still instantiates.

@prisma/orm-mongo/query-builder now serves the MongoDB facade mongoQuery, which validates with validateMongoContract, the validator and error of mongo({ contract }), and skips a value already validated. The internal query builder is unchanged, and every other export of the subpath still reaches users.

The family builder is renamed mongoQueryOnValidatedContract and moved to the internal entry @internal/mongo-query-builder/internal/on-validated-contract, published as @prisma/orm-family-mongo/query-builder/internal/on-validated-contract. The family query-builder root no longer exports any mongoQuery. The upgrade instructions add an extension fragment and find aliased imports and imports from the family package.

ExecutionStack.driver is optional. createSqlExecutionStack returns distinct driverless and driver-bearing stack types, and createToSql accepts the driverless type. Tests assert the type distinction.
The framework exports RuntimeMode, which SQL and Mongo runtime options use. PostgreSQL and SQLite static contexts accept driverless stacks. Runtime consumers no longer explicitly check for a missing driver descriptor before creating a driver.
Documentation and examples describe driverless stacks and client setup. Upgrade guidance and detection tests describe the driver-related type and factory changes.
Direct query-builder callers can construct queries from malformed contracts without the expected validation error. Restore validation at the public entry point before merging.

When extension code calls createSqlExecutionStack({ target, adapter }) and destructures driver from the result, the call returns SqlExecutionStack, which has no driver member. TypeScript reports an error. The existing patterns miss this inferred use: one requires SqlExecutionStackWithDriver, and the other requires .driver. Add a separate destructuring pattern and a regression fixture.

mongoQuery({ context }) reads the contract from a MongoDB execution context instead of taking { contract }. mongoStatic() and mongo() build it from the context they create after validating the contract, so applications use mongoStatic({ contract }).query or db.query. @prisma/orm-mongo/query-builder republishes the builder unchanged, as @prisma/orm-postgres/builder republishes the SQL builder; the facade wrapper, its entry and the internal subpath are removed. The upgrade fragments describe the new call.

…nd mongoQuery takes it
As SQL declares ExecutionContext in relational-core, MongoDB declares MongoExecutionContext in @internal/mongo-query-ast, with the contract, the codec lookup and applyMutationDefaults, and no stack. @internal/mongo-runtime still exports it. createMongoRuntime takes the stack as its own option, the way the SQL runtime receives its adapter beside the context, and every reader of context.stack uses the stack it now receives. mongoQuery takes { context: MongoExecutionContext<TContract> }, so an object holding only a contract no longer compiles.

mongoQuerywrapper in the MongoDB package, with the builder renamed and published under aninternal/path. It added an entry point SQL does not have, and duplicatedmongoStatic, which already validates and returns the builder.MongoExecutionContextand give the runtime a second context type that adds it. SQL's context has no stack, and the SQL runtime receives its adapter separately.enumson the context, so collections anddb.enumsshare one set of objects. SQL's context has noenums.Closes TML-3686, TML-3689, TML-3690.
