Walkthrough
This pull request adds API tests for report-template creation, retrieval, updates, listing, schema retrieval, and previews. The tests cover permissions, validation, filtering, response fields, and failure responses.
Changes: Report template API tests
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Creation setup and validation care/emr/tests/test_report_template_api.py
Adds helpers and tests for facility and instance template creation, permission outcomes, duplicate slugs, and invalid input.
Retrieval, updates, and listing care/emr/tests/test_report_template_api.py
Adds tests for retrieval and updates, access outcomes, missing templates, list filters, ordering, and response fields.
Schema and preview requests care/emr/tests/test_report_template_api.py
Adds tests for schema permissions and failures, plus preview authorization, validation, rendering, and error responses.
This test-only change introduces no established production regression, but it locks in misleading validation wording and leaves partial updates inadequately tested. Correct those tests or explicitly accept the bounded follow-up before merging.

Explanation
The title "ENG-852 Testcases for Report template api" matches the changeset, which adds ReportTemplateAPITest in care/emr/tests/test_report_template_api.py covering creation, retrieval, updates, listing, schema retrieval, and preview requests. The ticket prefix is a tracker reference and does not hide the main change. The title is short, specific, and clearly describes the primary change.

Explanation
Docstring coverage is 77.78% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 9 functions across 1 files.
Resolution
Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Authorize the destination facility on template update.
The update path checks only the template's current facility. A facility value in the update payload is saved by TemplateCreateSpec.perform_extra_deserialization with no destination check. An editor of facility A can move a template into facility B without write access to B. Check the destination in authorize_update, as authorize_create already does.

Update authorize_update to authorize both the template’s current facility and
any destination facility specified in the update request before the facility
change is saved. Reuse the destination-facility lookup and write-permission
check established by authorize_create, preserving the existing current-facility
authorization.

The shared role in setUp grants both can_write_template and can_read_template. The create and update success tests use that role, so they still pass if a read requirement is added to the write check. Nothing in the file asserts that a root-organization user holding only can_write_template can create or update a template.
Add write-only success tests for create and update so the write-only contract is exercised.

Add focused create and update success tests in the report-template API test
class using a root-organization user granted only
TemplatePermissions.can_write_template. Assert each request succeeds, ensuring
neither test relies on the shared role that also grants
TemplatePermissions.can_read_template.
Assert that preview output contains no unresolved template expressions.
Assert that preview output contains no unresolved template expressions.
The success test checks only the status code and the static Discharge Summary heading from the template body. Those checks pass even when the renderer leaves {{ encounter.patient.name }} and the other expressions unresolved. Add an assertion that the rendered output contains no template delimiters:

Review comment at @care/emr/tests/test_report_template_api.py at line 739:
Update the successful preview assertion in the test containing the “Discharge
Summary” check to verify the rendered response has no unresolved template
delimiters, while preserving the existing status and heading assertions.
PDF is a registered format, but this suite never requests it. The preview tests use the html default or post docx. A change that rejects PDF in preview would still pass every test here. A request-level test closes that gap.

Add a request-level PDF preview test alongside the existing preview format
tests, using generate_preview_data with output_format="pdf" and posting to
get_preview_url as the authenticated superuser. Assert a successful response and
the application/pdf content type, preserving the existing invalid-format test.

Name the context field in the empty-context error.
TemplateCreateSpec.validate_context raises "Report Type is required" when context is empty. The new test test_create_report_template_with_empty_context asserts that same text, so it accepts a message that names the wrong field. Correct the message in spec.py and update this assertion together.

@field_validator("context")
@classmethod
def validate_context(cls, v):

Update TemplateCreateSpec.validate_context so an empty context reports “Context
is required,” and update the assertion in
test_create_report_template_with_empty_context to expect that message.

Send only the changed field in the PATCH test.
test_partial_update_report_template sends the full create payload with name changed. That payload also passes under full-update semantics, so the test does not check partial behavior.
A body that contains only name fails validation in handle_update before the partial flag is read (care/emr/api/viewsets/base.py:233). Forwarding partial from update() alone does not fix this. The update path also needs partial-aware validation, and perform_extra_deserialization (care/emr/resources/report/template/spec.py:50) needs to handle an omitted slug_value. Until the update path supports partial bodies, this test fails.

Update the update flow used by test_partial_update_report_template so validation
honors partial updates before handle_update reads the partial flag, and make
perform_extra_deserialization handle an omitted slug_value. Then change the test
payload to contain only name, preserving the expected partial-update behavior
without relying on the full create payload.
