Safari 17 added profiles, but unlike Chromium browsers and Firefox, Safari has no command line flag or scripting API for choosing one. So { name: "Safari", profile: "Work" } used to be ignored and the url opened in whatever window was in front.

This PR makes the profile work through Safari's own File menu, which has a "New Window" item for each profile:

  1. Finicky brings Safari forward and presses File > "New Work Window" through the Accessibility API, from inside the Finicky process. Driving it from an osascript child doesn't work, because macOS then checks the Accessibility permission of osascript instead of Finicky.
  2. It waits up to a few seconds for the new window to appear.
  3. It hands the url over with open -a Safari <url>, which loads it into the active window, now the one in the chosen profile.

If Safari isn't running, Finicky launches it first and then retries.

Notes:

  • It needs Accessibility permission for Finicky. The check uses AXIsProcessTrustedWithOptions with the prompt option, so macOS asks for the grant the first time instead of failing silently.
  • Safari profile urls always open in the foreground, because the new window has to be the active one. openInBackground is ignored for them, and a log line says so.
  • Menu titles are localized, so this matches English Safari. A profile with no matching menu item is reported as an error rather than guessed at.
  • findBrowserInfo is factored out of LaunchBrowser so the Safari type can be checked on its own.

Tests cover browser detection, the menu item title, passing the url as its own argument, the error message for each failure and dry runs. The README has a short section with an example.

This is independent of #559 (the ask picker). The two merge together cleanly, and that's how I've been running them.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Safari links can open in a selected profile. Finicky opens a new window from Safari’s File menu before handing it the URL.
    • Safari profile windows always open in the foreground. Safari must be running, and Finicky needs Accessibility permission to select the profile.
  • Documentation
    • Added setup guidance and a configuration example. Profile names must match the English names shown in Safari’s File menu.

Chromium and Firefox take a profile on the command line, but Safari has no
command line or scripting API for profiles at all: `open -a Safari` always
lands in whichever profile was last active. The one mechanism Safari does
expose is its File menu, which gains a "New <profile> Window" item per
profile.

So a Safari browser with a profile now presses that item through the
Accessibility API, waits for the new window, and hands the url over with a
plain `open`, which Safari loads into its active window, now the profile
window. Safari reuses that window's blank tab, so no stray tab is left.

The press happens inside Finicky, which already needs Accessibility for the
opener window title. Driving the menu from an osascript child instead fails
with "osascript is not allowed assistive access", because macOS checks the
permission against osascript rather than Finicky, and granting it to
osascript would hand UI control to every script on the machine.

Safari is always brought forward for a profile, since the url follows the
active window. Menu titles are localized, so a missing item is reported by
name rather than guessed at. The browsers.json lookup is factored into
findBrowserInfo so the launcher can check a browser's type first.

Walkthrough

Safari profile launches now select a matching Safari window through the File menu using Accessibility, then open the requested URL. The change adds launch error handling, dry-run behavior, tests, and README guidance.

Changes: Safari Profiles

Layer / File(s) Summary
Safari menu accessibility
apps/finicky/src/browser/safari_menu.h, apps/finicky/src/browser/safari_menu.m
The C function checks Accessibility access, finds and presses the requested Safari File-menu item, and waits for Safari’s window count to increase. It returns status codes for permission, Safari, menu-item, window-count, and timeout outcomes.
Profile launch integration

LaunchBrowser routes Safari profiles to the new launch path. That path selects the profile window and opens the URL, with dry-run handling and profile-specific errors. Tests cover browser lookup, menu titles, URL arguments, error messages, and dry runs. The README documents setup and behavior.

Safari profile launching works in the common path. A failed menu press is reported only after the full timeout with a less specific message, and a slow Safari start can occasionally fail where a retry would succeed. These are bounded edge cases worth fixing but not merge-blocking.

Explanation

The title "Open urls in a chosen Safari profile" matches the main change in the changeset. The PR adds launching of URLs into a specified Safari profile: launcher.go delegates profile launches to launchSafariProfile, and safari.go and safari_menu.m select the profile's New Window File-menu item through the Accessibility API before opening the URL. The title is specific and concise. It does not mention the Accessibility requirement or the English-only menu matching, which are secondary details.

Replace the fixed 2-second startup delay with a bounded retry.

After open -a Safari, the code sleeps for safariStartupDelay and presses the menu once. If Safari has no menu bar yet, safariOpenWindowFromMenu returns SAFARI_MENU_NO_ITEM. The user then sees "there is no profile named ...", although the profile exists and Safari was only slow.

Retry the press for a few attempts while the status is safariMenuNotRunning or safariMenuNoItem. Report the error only after the attempts are used up.

…not be counted

A slow Safari start can leave the menu bar empty, which was reported as a missing profile; the press is now retried a few times. If the starting window count cannot be read, the press is skipped instead of any later count passing as a new window.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Do not assume open will use the new window's profile.

If Safari has an “Open Links With Profile” rule for the URL's website, an external link can open in that rule's profile rather than the newly opened profile window. Safari also documents different behavior when the website is already open in another profile. Thus this command cannot guarantee the profile requested by launchSafariProfile. Verify the destination profile or use a URL-delivery mechanism that targets the selected window; otherwise report this limitation instead of claiming a successful profile launch. Check the File menu press result before polling.

AXUIElementPerformAction returns an AXError, but the code ignores it. If the press fails, the function still polls until timeoutSeconds elapses and returns SAFARI_MENU_TIMEOUT. The caller then reports that Safari did not open a window in time. That message hides the real cause and delays the error.

A window that opens during the poll for an unrelated reason also satisfies the count check. The function then returns SAFARI_MENU_OK. launchSafariProfile then runs open -a Safari with the URL, and that command loads the URL into Safari's active window. That window may not use the requested profile.

Return a failure as soon as the press fails.

Retry an unreadable window count during Safari startup.

If the first retry finds the menu item but cannot read Safari's window count, the C helper returns SAFARI_MENU_NO_WINDOWS. This condition breaks the retry loop, even though a later read could succeed. Keep the press skipped, but retry this status during startup. Apple's Accessibility API documents a failure when an application has not responded. (developer.apple.com)
